FORT MYERS — The Lemon Bay High School girls tennis needed only the singles matches Thursday afternoon to defeat Bishop Verot 4-1 and earn a seventh straight regional championship and berth in next week’s state tournament.
The Manta Rays, champs of Region 6, will face the Region 5 winner at 8 a.m. Monday at Red Bug Lake Park in Casselberry in the quarterfinals of the new team vs. team format.
Lemon Bay, also the District 2A-11 champion, won the four singles matches in straight sets. Sara Lown at No. 1, Stephanie Krisinski at No. 3, Shannen Smith at No. 4 and Danielle Tormey at No. 5 cruised with Krisinski’s 6-4, 6-4 decision the closest outcome.
Yvonne Wojtas, at No. 2, had the lone win for the Vikings, stopping Ashley Tormey in a pro-set tiebreaker after they split the first two sets.
