PORT CHARLOTTE — They say it’s difficult to beat a team three times in one season, but things are certainly made easier when you outscore the team by 33 runs in those three games.

Port Charlotte collected nearly half of that margin Monday in a 14-0 romp of Cypress Lake in the District 6A-11 quarterfinals. It was the Pirates third win against Cypress Lake this season.

“Tonight, we came out with confidence in the box,” Port Charlotte coach Ryann Baker said. ”I thought that played a huge role as far as moving people over. I don’t think we had an error in the game and that hasn’t happened all year. When you don’t commit an error you can win ballgames.”

Seeaira Yiengst dominated the Panthers with both her arm and bat in the win.

Yiengst held the visitors to four hits in the game’s five innings. She had eight strikeouts on the night, and at one point struck out five of six batters spread over three separate innings.

She was challenged only in the fifth, escaping a one-out bases-loaded jam to preserve the shutout.

“The first couple of innings she was throwing first-pitch strikes,” Baker said. “Regardless of the score, she needs to be in those situations (like the fifth inning) and work through them by herself.”

Yiengst helped her own cause in the second inning when she had the big blow in an eight-run inning. Her three-run triple made it a 7-0 game at the time, effectively putting things out of reach for the Panthers. She also had two RBIs in the third inning for a total of five on the night.

In that second inning, Brittany Ferrentino, Taylor Innello and Sam Hagerty had consecutive base hits, with Ferrentino and Hagerty driving in runs.
Ferrentino went 3-for-3 on the night, with three runs scored and an RBI. Innello also scored three runs in a 2-for-2 performance.

As a team, the Pirates picked up eight hits and drew six walks.

Port Charlotte will play at Mariner at 7 p.m. today.
