SARASOTA — The event had ended. Sarasota’s Jaasiel Torres had already been crowned champion.

But North Port High School high jumper Kevin Shahan was still going. Even after coach Phu Nguyen set the bar down, the senior picked it up off the mat and set it up to jump again.

He never quite reached the 6-02.00-mark that claimed the District 4A-8 title. But after three extra tries at it on Wednesday, Shahan feels like he’s getting closer.

“It’s very frustrating, because I know I’ve got the ups,” said Shahan, who finished in second place after jumping 6-00.00. “But the fact that I kept doing the same thing over and over again and didn’t get it — I know exactly what I need to do.”

Shahan was one of eight individuals to advance to next week’s Region 4A-3 meet for North Port, which finished sixth in the boys standings with 60 points and third in the girls meet with 93.5 points.

Sarasota scored 130 points to edge favorite Lakewood Ranch (125) for the boys title. The Mustangs cruised to the girls championship, totaling 199 points to outscore second-place Sarasota-Riverview by 85.

“I wish we would have gotten second, but we were just a couple athletes short,” Nguyen said of the girls team. “We’ve been following Riverview all year, and Lakewood Ranch — we knew we weren’t going to touch them. … But everyone ran great. It was an outstanding performance.”

On the boys side, Benjamin Durrant matched Shahan with a second-place finish in the 400, running 51.50 seconds to finish just behind Riverview’s Brantley Seadrow (50.59).

Juvens Delise finished third in the 800 and helped lead the 4×400 team of him, Durrant, Kevin Kapadia and Skylar Razwilavich finish third in a photo finish — Lakewood Ranch’s Kris Haller dove across the line to help the Mustangs edge Manatee and North Port by .12 seconds.

The 4×800 relay team of Louis Dietrich, Philip Cutchineal, Durrant and Delise also advanced with a third-place finish.

The North Port girls won three district titles, getting first-place finishes from Armani Seale in the 200, Shelby Cutchineal in the 800 and the 4×800 relay team of Cutchineal, Kaley Boethig, Nicole Raczka and Lindsay Boethig.

Junior Morgan Gloster finished second in the pole vault in her first year competing in the event, Lindsay Boethig finished third in the 800 and Carly Lovette took third in the high jump. Field standout Alexis Francavilla took bronze in each the long jump, triple jump and shot put.

“There was nothing disappointing,” Nguyen said. “It’s nice to bring home a trophy, but for not bringing home a trophy, this might be the best possible mood that I could be in.”

The biggest boost to his mood was the girls’ final race of the day. The 4×400 relay team of Raczka, Seale, Abey Nottingham and Cutchineal finished second, but they ran a 4:10.26 to set a new school record they had been working toward all season.

“That was an awesome way to finish,” Nguyen said. “They wanted to win, but breaking a school-record is a good consolation.”
