IN A NUTSHELL: Lemon Bay couldn’t overcome three first-quarter turnovers, as Port Charlotte turned those takeaways into 17 points. Shawn Campbell dominated in the first half, rushing the ball 12 times for 114 yards and a touchdown.

DID YOU SEE THAT: After fumbling the opening kickoff, Lemon Bay attempted some trickery on its first offensive drive. Quarterback Hayden Wolff was under center, but the rest of the offensive line was lined up to the left of the ball. On the second play, Brenden Shuman fumbled, and it was returned 31 yards for a touchdown by TJ Luther.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN: William Furlow intercepted Victor Mellor on the Port Charlotte 14 yard line in the first quarter. Already leading 10-0, a 33-yard rush from Campbell plus a 47-yarder from Ernest Harvey led to another quick score. Campbell’s two-yard score gave them what turned out to be an insurmountable 17-0 lead.

UNSUNG HERO: Kicker Devyn McCormick had a pair of field goals from 31 and 32 yards, and hit on all four extra point attempts, accounting for 10 points by himself. He also pinned the Manta Rays at the 20 yard line to begin drives three times with a touchback, as Port Charlotte dominated the field possession game.

THEY SAID IT: “The kids were very focused. I knew from the walk through on Thursday it would be a different approach this week, and that showed this morning. The kids did a really nice job focusing, and that was definitely shown on the field… We played smarter football today. Last week we played dumb. We cleaned up a lot of mistakes in penalties, and that’s what I was proud of.” — Port Charlotte coach Jordan Ingman
