JORDAN’S athlete of the week
I’ve only seen her play once but that’s all it took for me to realize how talented Alexis Francavilla is on the volleyball court for the North Port Bobcats.

Francavilla is my pick for Athlete of the Week because of her dominating performances against Lemon Bay and Port Charlotte this past week. The junior was a force to be reckoned with, especially against Port Charlotte when she posted eight kills, and she also led the Bobcats in blocks in both victories.

She’s North Port’s “secret weapon” according to coach Adrienne Moreno, a cog that’s been instrumental in the team’s 3-0 start after another victory over DeSoto County Monday night.

BRYAN’s athlete of the week
This week, I think Isabella Coogan was the athlete of the week. The Charlotte High School sophomore won the Caloosahatchee Riverdale Invitational with a time of 19 minutes, 34.3 seconds.

Coogan’s win was 10 seconds faster than Kelsi Ogilvie’s, who was your choice for athlete of the week. Although Ogilvie won the Lemon Bay Invitational, and you can’t do any better than first place, Coogan’s win was more impressive in my opinion for two reasons.

First, it broke a seven-year Tarpons record previously held by Teressa Gugino at 19:44.

It was also a statement win for Coogan in her first race of the year. She made great progression as a freshman last year, finishing in the top-15 at regionals, and would’ve qualified for states all by herself had her teammates ended up not qualifying as a team.

To me, Coogan’s 19:43 says she’s ready to be considered one of the best – if not the best – runners in the area. That’s something we already knew about Ogilvie, but now she has some steep competition in Punta Gorda for potential runner of the year in December.
