Cardinal Mooney (2-1) at Lemon Bay (0-3)
Time: 7 p.m.
Last week: Cardinal Mooney 42, Indian Rocks Christian 7; DeSoto 16, Lemon Bay 10.
Last season: Lemon Bay 14, Cardinal Mooney 10
Players to watch: Cardinal Mooney: Tristan Hillerich (Sr., QB), Bryce Williams (Jr., RB), Chad Wilkins (Sr., DE/WR); Lemon Bay: Victor Mellor (Sr., ATH), Brayden Curry (Sr., RB), Logan Lydic (Jr., LB).
What to expect: This was a matchup the Manta Rays won last season, so this could be a good chance for them to finally find their way into the win column. The Cougars have improved since last year, though. They’ve already matched their win total from last year, and the offense has scored more than 40 points in both wins, with a stingy defense holding teams to 15 or less points in all three games this season.
Charlotte (3-0) at Fort Myers (2-2)
Time: 7:30 p.m.
Last week: South Fort Myers 18, Fort Myers 16; Charlotte 42, Ida Baker 7
Last season: Charlotte 42, Fort Myers 0
Players to watch: Fort Myers: Darrian Felix (Sr., RB), Ben Stobaugh (Sr., QB/DB), Dawson DeGroot (Sr., ATH); Charlotte: Dee Hicks (Sr., QB), Maleek Williams (Sr., RB), D’Vonte Price (Sr., ATH)
What to expect: This will be the toughest test of the young season for Charlotte, as the Tarpons and Green Wave renew its rivalry. Charlotte romped Fort Myers last year, so look for the Green Wave to come out looking for revenge this season. The high-powered Tarpon offense will have its successes, the key will be how well the defense can contain Darrian Felix, who already has 500 yards from scrimmage this season.
Booker (0-3) at Port Charlotte (3-0)
Time: 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Port Charlotte 56, Cape Coral 0.
Last season: Booker 41, Port Charlotte 38
Players to watch: Booker: Jamal Benson (Sr., RB), Javarius Cannon (Jr., LB), Deron Davis (Sr., RB/DL); Port Charlotte: Paul Barnes (Jr., QB), Tiyan “Pop” Bush (Sr., LB), Earnest Harvey (Sr., RB).
What to expect: It’s homecoming night at Port Charlotte, so look for a great atmosphere at the game. The Pirates are out-scoring its opponents 123-14 this season, going up against a Tornado tam which has allowed 130 points. Likely the only thing which could trip up Port Charlotte is the fact that they will only have four days of rest, recovery and preparation for this game, after last week’s game was postponed until Monday. Considering Booker defeated Port Charlotte last season, expect the Pirates to keep the pedal to the metal all night long.
Coral Reef (0-4) at Venice (3-0)
Time: 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Braddock 27, Coral Reef 24; Venice 56, North Port 0.
Last season: Venice 37, Coral Reef 7
Players to watch: Coral Reef: Jordan Donaldson (Jr., RB), Keith Anderson (Sr., QB); Venice: Court Doss (Jr., RB), Bryce Carpenter (Jr., QB).
What to expect: The Indians continue to roll and show just how great they are every week. Don’t look for this week to be any different. Venice defeated Coral Reef by 30 points last year, and the Barracudas return just nine of 22 starters from last year. Donaldson is Coral Reef’s biggest threat, but expect the stout Venice defense to bottle him up.
