The Tampa Bay Rays announced their minor league award winners on Friday, with Greg Harris and Nick Ciuffo being named to a pair of awards.
Ciuffo,a catcher, was the defensive player of the year for the Rays’ minor league system, thanks in part to his arm behind the plate. Ciuffo threw out 27 of 46 (58.7 percent) runners during his time with the Stone Crabs, which was a Florida State League-best for this season.
Harris was named the Stone Crabs’ most valuable player after compiling a 10-6 record with a 3.12 earned run average.
The right-hander led the Florida State League in strikeouts with 134. He had the third-most innings pitched (147), and fourth-best opponents’ batting average (.228). Harris was also the only Stone Crab to be represented in the FSL postseason all-star team.
