PORT CHARLOTTE — Thanks to strong performances by Marc Kaneko Fujii and Yui Fujii, Port Charlotte holds a 4-stroke lead after the first round of the boys Charlotte County Championship.
The two Pirates both shot 37’s in the 9-hole round at the Port Charlotte Golf Club Tuesday to help their squad to a team-score of 154, just ahead of the Tarpons’ 158. The Manta Rays are 23 strokes back with a score of 177.
David Derocher also shot a strong round for the Pirates with a 39 and Logan Sorah was right behind him with a 41. Jacob Goldman and Anthony Hodges both shot a 44 for Port Charlotte.
Truman Bethel shot a team-best 38 for Charlotte while Jake Haas shot a 39. Jacob Smith finished the round with a 40 while Billy Brumbaugh shot a 41 for the Tarpons, who are currently back-to-back champions.
Jacob Cooper led Lemon Bay with a 39 but three golfers shot 50 or worse in the round, putting the Manta Rays in a big hole heading into today.
The three teams began the round on Monday but didn’t finish it due to lightning.
The second leg of the tournament, which will also be nine holes, will be held today at the Kingsway Country Club. The final round will be 18 holes at Rotonda Palms in Englewood on Friday.
