FOOTBALL: Week 6 preview capsules

By Bryan Levine, SunCoast Sports

Island Coast (0-5) at Charlotte (4-0)

Time: 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Lehigh 43, Island Coast 6; Charlotte 26, Fort Myers 6
Last season: Charlotte 45, Island Coast 0
Players to watch: Island Coast: Kory Curtis (Sr. QB), Marlon Gaymon (Sr. WR), Isiah Crawford (Sr. WR); Charlotte: Dee Hicks (Sr., QB), Maleek Williams (Sr., RB), D’Vonte Price (Sr., ATH).
What to expect: The Tarpons won by 45 points last season, and will likely do the same again tonight. Gators quarterback Curtis loves getting the ball to Gaymon and Crawford. If the Charlotte defensive backs can contain them, then it’ll be an easy night in Punta Gorda.

Port Charlotte (4-0) at North Fort Myers (2-1)

Time: 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Port Charlotte 28, Booker 0; North Fort Myers 34, Mariner 21.
Last season: Port Charlotte 33, North Fort Myers 27
Players to watch: Port Charlotte: Paul Barnes (Jr., QB), Tiyan “Pop” Bush (Sr., LB), Earnest Harvey (Sr., RB). North Fort Myers: Zaquandre White (Sr., RB), Herbert Riggins (Sr. WR/DB), Brandon King (Sr., WR/DL).
What to expect: This was a close game for the Pirates last season and will likely be a tough test for them tonight. So far this season, they’ve cruised by their other tough tests. The key will be how well the front four of Port Charlotte’s defense can contain FSU commit Zaquandre White. Look for the Pirate offense to continue to put up big rushing numbers.

Lemon Bay (0-4) at Hardee (3-2)

Time: 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Cardinal Mooney 27, Lemon Bay 14; Sebring 27, Hardee 14
Last season: Hardee 28, Lemon Bay 21
Players to watch: Lemon Bay: Victor Mellor (Sr., ATH), Brayden Curry (Sr., RB), Logan Lydic (Jr., LB); Hardee: Hayden Lindsey (Sr., QB), Parker Carlton (Sr., RB), Jaquavious Kimbrough (Sr., RB/DB).
What to expect: The Wildcats can beat a team in the air or on the ground. This will likely be the toughest test of the season to date for the winless Manta Rays. Cartlon and Kimbrough are a heavy one-two punch in the backfield. It’ll be up to the Lemon Bay’s front to stop them, and give the offense an opportunity to score enough points.

Southeast (1-2) at DeSoto County (1-2)

Time: 7 p.m.
Last week: Neither team played
Last season: Southeast 28, DeSoto County 3
Players to watch: Southeast: Alex Taylor (Jr., QB), Jon Locke (Sr., DB/LB); DeSoto County: Niron Washington (Sr. RB/DB), Emmanuel Wesley (Sr., WR/DB).
What to expect: The Seminoles have three players who have over 100-yard seasons already, as their high-powered offense can beat a team in the air with quarterback Alex Taylor and on the ground with running back Latrell Peavy. It will be up to the likes of Niron Washington to keep up with Southeast.

North Port (0-4 )at Braden River (4-0)

Time: 7:30 p.m.
Last week: North Port did not play; Braden River 55, Leesburg 7
Last season: Braden River 42, North Port 7
Players to watch: North Port: Skylar Razwilavich (Jr., QB), C.K. Poulos (Jr., WR), Devon Allen (Jr., WR). Braden River: Tyrone Collins (Sr., WR/DB), Knowledge McDaniel (So., RB), Louis Colosimo (Sr., QB).
What to expect: The Pirates have talent and experience at all the right positions, so look for a similar result from last year. Braden River forced 29 interceptions last season. Devon Allen will need to protect the ball to keep the Bobcats in this one.

Sarasota (3-1) at Venice (4-0)

Time: 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Sarasota did not play; Venice 68, Coral Reef 0
Last season: Venice 48, Sarasota 0
Players to watch: Sarasota: Bryan Gagg (So., QB), Josh Booker (Sr., RB); Venice: Court Doss (Jr., RB), Bryce Carpenter (Jr., QB)
What to expect: It’s been a great start to the season for the Sailors, but they’re about to hit a bump in the road this week against Venice. The Indians had a 61-point lead at halftime last week before taking the foot off the pedal. A 48-point win from last season is likely what can be expected tonight.
