Congratulations to Lemon Bay cross country runner Maddison Welch, who received 459 votes to be named Athlete of the Week for Sept. 26 – Oct, 1. Welch won the FLRunners.com Invite on Saturday with a time of 19:27.16.
The results with 1,683 votes cast through 3 p.m. Tuesday:
Maddison Welch, Lemon Bay: 27.27%
Kaley Boethig, North Port: 23.47%
Dee Hicks, Charlotte: 22.4%
Ernest Harvey, Port Charlotte: 10.93%
Lindsey Matthews, North Port: 7.49%
Brayden Curry, Lemon Bay: 4.81%
Jake Haas, Charlotte: 2.38%
Yui Fujii, Port Charlotte: 1.25%

This was one of the tougher weeks to choose an athlete of the week. There could be a case made for each of the candidates.

But I have to give it to Dee Hicks for this week.

His performance in Charlotte’s win on Friday was incredible. Every time he controlled the ball, and didn’t hand it off to Maleek Williams (who also had a stellar week), Hicks made things happen. Five of the eight plays he was in on ended up with a Tarpon touchdown, and he never stepped foot on the field in the second half.

In my opinion, he made himself a very strong candidate for The Sun’s player of the year with this week’s performance.

Charlotte set a points record for a single half Friday night, putting up 63 points against Island Coast in the first half to break the previous record by a point and quarterback Dee Hicks was a big reason why.

Hicks made the most of his touches in the blowout win, combining for five touchdowns in the first half. He completed all three of his passes for 125 yards and a touchdown but did most of the damage with his feet, rushing for 117 yards and four scores.

Did I also mention he won homecoming king?

That’s a pretty darn good night.
