IN A NUTSHELL: Port Charlotte jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter before cruising to a 38-7 victory over Island Coast. The Gators were able to move the ball fairly easily in the second half, but eight of their 12 penalties came after the break, and ruined any good drive they had. The Pirates capitalized, and kept them out of the end zone in the second half, as they were able to rest a bunch of their starters.

DID YOU SEE THAT: Sixty-one of Shawn Campbell’s 108 rushing yards came on one rush which gave the Pirates a 14-0 lead. Campbell barreled over Island Coast tacklers on the play, and was the team’s leading rusher, despite never touching the ball in the second half.

IT WAS OVER WHEN: Pop Bush returned a punt for 60 yards down to the Island Coast 30-yard line. After a Port Charlotte penalty backed them up five yards, Paul Barnes found Ernest Harvey for a 35-yard touchdown pass, taking the wind out of the sails for the Gators, and giving the Pirates a lead which felt impossible to come back from.

UNSUNG HERO: Steven Muse intercepted Island Coast quarterback Kory Curtis on the drive after the Gators scored a touchdown. Island Coast had been moving the ball, but Muse ended the threat, and helped Port Charlotte control field position for the rest of the half.

THEY SAID IT: “It’s all about conditioning. Our kids are highly conditioned, and we take a lot of pride in that. The kids enjoy being in better shape, and that’s come into play several times this season.” – Port Charlotte coach Jordan Ingman.
