NORTH PORT – Bryan Gagg’s six yard touchdown run with 42 seconds remaining lifted Sarasota High to a 13-12 decision over North Port in a Class 7A-District 11 showdown Friday night.

The Sailor quarterback rolled left and dove over the pylon to tie the score at 12-12, and Austin Weigman’s PT kick gave the Sailors the win.

A pass interference penalty in the end zone on fourth down had kept the Sarasota drive alive, and a disappointed Bobcat coach Brian Hatler was nearly speechless afterwards.

“There was a penalty on fourth down that gave them a first down,” Hatler said.  “Those things happen. I’m proud of our kids effort.  They played hard.  We’re gonna come back out Monday and get ready for our next game.”

After a scoreless first half, the Sailors broke out on top on a 51-yard scoring pass from Gagg to Devic DuBose  on the fourth play of the third quarter.

The Bobcats answered with a 7-yard TD pass from Devon Allen to Jeffrey Giullaume with 3:34 to go in the period to tie the score.  Then North Port went ahead on the final play of the third quarter as CK Poulos caught a 19-yard strike from Allen.

North Port stymied the Sailors by stopping a fake punt attempt near midfield, then got an interception from Skylar Razwilavich to thwart another Sarasota drive.  But the Sailors got the ball at their own 20 with 4:32 to play and marched down the field for the winning points.

North Port started three possessions inside Sarasota territory in the first half, and moved into Sailor territory twice more, but squandered the opportunities each time.  The first sustained drive of the half moved the Bobcats from their own 19 to the Sailors 15 before Devon Allen’s pass was intercepted by Charles Ward.  North Port moved to the Sarasota 32 on its next possession, but Allen was sacked for a 10-yard loss on fourth down.

A 46-yard pass from Allen to CK Poulos down the left sideline and a face mask penalty moved the ball to the Sailor 20, but the Bobcats were again stopped on downs.

Meanwhile, the Sailors had gained only 26 yards of offense midway through the second quarter. A pass from Bryan Gagg to Xakari Hawkins that would have brought the ball to the Bobcat 10 yard line was nullified by an ineligible receiver penalty.

But taking over with two minutes to go in the half, Gagg completed four consecutive passes to four different receivers to move the ball into Bobcat territory before Allen intercepted a tipped ball to end the threat.

Allen finished 17 of 35 passing for 210 yards and the two touchdowns.  Poulos caught eight passes for 150 yards.
