CROSS COUNTRY: Dietrich lone Bobcat to qualify for States

By Jordan Kroeger, SunCoast Sports

LAKELAND — It should have been a joyous Friday morning for Louis Dietrich.

North Port’s senior had just finished 11th at the Region 4A-2 cross country meet, good enough to qualify for next week’s Class 4A state meet. But he’ll be running alone in Tallahassee next weekend.

One year after North Port’s girls suffered heartbreak at regionals — falling one point shy of advancing to state — the boys felt similar pain Friday. The Bobcats finished in seventh place, eight points shy of Steinbrenner and St. Petersburg, the last two teams to qualify for state championship.

Lakewood Ranch took home the title with a score of 85, followed by Newsome (89), Sarasota (120) and Wharton (130).

Dietrich had to hold back tears after the scores came through, disappointed his teammates won’t be joining him in his final high school race.

“It’s going to be hard. It’s bittersweet,” Dietrich said. “It’s my first state competition. My expectation was that my team was going to be with me so it’s going to be tough to just be running by myself. We’ll see how it goes.”

Dietrich finished with a time of 17:07.08 at Holloway Park, a little more than 35 seconds behind individual champion Jordan Gonzalez from Sarasota (16:36.48). A cold slowed Dietrich at last week’s district meet, and after getting better over the past week, he got sick again Thursday.

Charles Moody was the next Bobcat to cross the finish line in 27th place in 17:38.67. Following Moody was Dillon Garrett (43rd), Evan Weisberger (50th), Javier Amaya (79th), Kevin Kapadia (98th) and Jeffrey Frias (103rd).

Kapadia came up hobbling midway through the race, and North Port coach Phu Nguyen says it cost the runner about two minutes on his time of 19:30.55. North Port’s girls also suffered heartbreak, finishing in 10th place with a score of 225.

Kaley Boethig ran North Port’s best time with a 20:46.68 for 28th place. However, the next Bobcat didn’t cross the finish until nearly 30 seconds later. when Darielle Costa took 48th in 21:16.56.

Steinbrenner won the championship with a score of 46. Bailey Hertenstein was the individual champion in 18:13.83.
