FOOTBALL: Week 11 capsules

North Port (1-8) at Lemon Bay (2-7)

What to expect: North Port earned its second win of the season last week against the only team North Port has defeated all year. Neither team will be moving on to the playoffs after tonight, so they’ll both be looking to end their 2016 seasons on a high note.

Westland Hialeah (0-8) at Port Charlotte (7-1)

Time: 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Miami Springs 53, Westland Hialeah 0; Charlotte 21, Port Charlotte 17

What to expect: Westland Hialeah has lost 32 straight games dating to the 2013 season. This will be a week for the Pirates where they can rest their starters to get healthy for the playoffs. With the loss of Ernest Harvey for the remainder of the season with a broken ankle, it’ll give Port Charlotte’s second-team running backs more opportunities in actual game situations.

Palmetto (6-3) at Charlotte (8-0)

Time: 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Venice 28, Palmetto 3; Charlotte 21, Port Charlotte 17
Last season: Charlotte 28-3
Players to watch: Palmetto: Jason Spicer Jr., (Jr., QB) Elijah Davis (Jr., RB), Sidney Pompey (Jr., WR); Charlotte: Dee Hicks (Sr., QB), Maleek Williams (Sr., RB), Savorion Warren (Sr., DB); .
What to expect: Palmetto is a good team whose three losses came against playoff-bound teams, one powerful Venice last week (28-3). Charlotte is looking to complete its second straight undefeated regular season. There is no next week for the Tigers, so expect them to leave it all on the field tonight. This will be a good playoff tune-up for the Tarpons before next week’s first round.

Booker (4-5) at Venice (8-0)

Time: 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Southeast 28, Booker 21; Venice 28, Palmetto 3
Last season: Venice 45-10
Players to watch: Booker: Jamal Benson (Sr., RB), Javarius Cannon (Jr., LB); Venice: Court Doss (Jr., RB), Bryce Carpenter (Jr., QB).
What to expect: Venice’s playoff run on the way to a potential state championship begins next week, but in the mean time, they’ll have a tune-up week against Booker. The Tornadoes are 2-1 against area teams this season, with wins over Lemon Bay and DeSoto County and a loss against Port Charlotte.

DeSoto County (2-7) at Lakewood Ranch (1-7)

Time: 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Hardee 34, DeSoto County 3; Lakewood Ranch 42, North Port 7
Last season: Lakewood Ranch 23-21
Players to watch: DeSoto County: Niron Washington (Sr. RB/DB), Emmanuel Wesley (Sr., WR/DB); Lakewood Ranch: Justin Curtis (Jr., QB), Kalen Johnson (Sr., WR).
What to expect: The Mustangs got win No. 1 last week against the Bobcats. The Bulldogs are looking to exceed last year’s win total to cap off this year. It should be an evenly-matched game with the winner being whichever team gets off to a better start.
