NORTH PORT — North Port High School’s girls basketball team couldn’t match visiting Gulf Coast Tuesday night.
The Sharks rolled to an 80-41 victory over the Bobcats in a District 8A-12 contest. Sophomore Yasmeen Chang scored 33 points to lead the winners to an easy victory.
The Bobcats (2-4, 0-1 District 8A-12), with just two seniors on their squad, fell behind 18-10 at the end of the first quarter and the Sharks (8-0, 1-0) gradually pulled away for a lopsided victory. The game went to a running clock in the fourth quarter.
“We started out pretty well,” said North Port coach Dale Huffman. “We tried to stay with them. But we would make a mistake, then follow it with another mistake until it buried us.”
Junior Alexis Francavilla was a standout for the Bobcats. She scored 21 points and did an excellent job on the boards and on defense. Emani Jefferson added 13 points, 11 of them in the first half.
The Bobcats will take on visiting Riverdale at 7:30 p.m. Friday night.
