We’re entering a crucial stretch of the season, as the final district games of the regular season are being played out.
Charlotte is now tied for first place in District 7A-10 with Cape Coral. Both teams are 7-2 in league play, with Port Charlotte sitting close behind at 6-2.
The Pirates, Tarpons and Lemon Bay all have a pair of district games this week which will more or less paint the final picture of the regular season for those three teams.
In North Port, the final two games of last week were the first two games all season where they’ve had all 13 players on the roster healthy at the same time. The Bobcats managed to get through district play at a perfect 4-0, clinching the No. 1 seed in the district.
The Bobcats went 3-0 last week, scoring 74 or more points in each of those three games.
Lemon Bay will be hosting a freshman shootout on Saturday, showcasing some of the best future varsity players in the area. Both The Manta Rays and Charlotte’s freshmen teams will compete.
THE BEST OF THE BEST
All four teams played in the Wally Keller Classic on Saturday, with Port Charlotte and North Port grabbing wins. Lemon Bay’s Keegan Wyman and Bobcat Bryan O’Boyle both led all area scorers with 21 points on Saturday. Pirate Sean Price and 20 points, and Ahmad Johnson led Charlotte with 17 points.
North Port’s Zach Babut didn’t score in double figures in any of the seven previous games prior to Friday, but in the two games over the weekend he scored 16 and 11 points.
DON’T CALL IT AN UPSET
Charlotte leap-frogged Port Charlotte in the district standings with their 51-48 over the Pirates on Friday. The Tarpons made just one field goal in the fourth quarter, but thanks to 15 of 16 shooting from the free-throw line, they managed to come from behind.
WALLY KELLER FACT
In Charlotte’s tough defensive 43-41 battle against Fort Myers on Saturday, the Tarpons scored less points than Keith Stone (42) in the Wally Keller Classic back in 2015.
