CAPE CORAL – With a pair of big games coming up this weekend, the Charlotte High School girls basketball team could be excused for looking ahead.
But Tuesday night, the Tarpons took care of business on the road against a winless Ida Baker squad, cruising 77-22 in a game played with a running clock the entire second half.
The Tarpons’ win set the table for a big weekend.
Charlotte’s schedule is such that the team’s final three district games are all away from home, and all this week.
The Tarpons (10-6. 9-0 District 7A-10) have tough district assignments coming up on the road this weekend, facing second-place Cape Coral on Friday and third-place Island Coast on Saturday. The top-seed for the district tournament is at stake.
“We’ve got to be ready for Friday and Saturday – bigger, bigger and bigger things,” Charlotte coach Matt Stephenson said. “We still have to have the focus definitely on Friday and Saturday. We have been talking about that, big district seedings going on, playing two tough opponents that we’ve had trouble with.”
The showdowns this weekend will also prepare the Tarpons for the rigors of the district tournament, which will take place the week of Jan. 30.
“We’ve seen the scores they’ve been putting up,” Stephenson said. “They’ve been on the radar. They were tough at our place, and we just have to bring that same intensity.
“This stretch we’ve had circled for a while. They’ve known about it all week — not overlooking this game – but our focus has to be on those two games. They’re major for us.”
Charlotte stormed out to a 53-13 lead by halftime. Kelyn Moses scored 16 of her 24 points in the first half. Kayla Lamb (21 points total) had 13 by intermission.
Moses added four assists and three steals. Taylor Kirkus had five of her six rebounds in the first quarter.
For Ida Baker (0-14, 0-7), Kiley Jones led the way with nine points.
