ENGLEWOOD – Lemon Bay High School girls basketball coach Mike Young knew pretty much what Island Coast’s team would do in Tuesday night’s District 7A-10 game, but it didn’t make any difference.
“We knew they have a very tough zone defense,” Young said after the visitors rolled over the Manta Rays 73-38. “But we just couldn’t stop it. They have a very good team.”
Island Coast (14-3, 8-3), jumped out to a 16-4 lead after the first quarter behind the inside scoring of 6-foot-1 center Hailey Kalamaras. She scored eight points to spark the early surge and the Gators forced several Manta Rays turnovers.
The Manta Rays (9-11, 4-6) played better in the second quarter, scoring 12 points to 18 for the visitors. But Island Coast still led 34-16 at halftime and gradually increased its advantage in the second half.
Shania Church, who led all scorers with 23 for the game, scored 9 points in the second quarter for Island Coast and had 13 for the first half. Kalamaras had 12 points in the first half and finished with 18.
Junior Francesca Gallucci led Lemon Bay with 11 points, but no other Mantas Rays scored in double figures.
Young substituted extensively and seven Manta Rays hit the scoring column. But it was not nearly enough. Island Coast made five 3-point field goals to just one for the Manta Rays.
“I think Baker (junior Sidney Baker) had a pretty good second half,” Young said. “But it’s hard to think of anyone playing really good in a game like this.”
Baker scored 7 points, all in the second half. Katie Stevens added 6. Anna-Maria Hoffman added 13 points for the Manta Rays as the Gators had three players in double figures.
“The zone press was the key for us tonight,” Island Coast coach Shari Gear. “That set the tone.”
The Manta Rays will play visiting North Fort Myers Friday night in Lemon Bay’s Senior Night at 7 p.m.
