ENGLEWOOD — Jason Jones is back as Lemon Bay High School’s boys golf coach, Lemon Bay athletic director Ryan LaVallee announced Tuesday.
Jones previously held the position in 2007-2008 before moving to North Carolina, where he spent the past eight seasons as the golf coach at Northwest Guilford High School in Greensboro before moving back to the area in June.
He takes over for Chuck Beahrs, who steps down after two seasons to focus more on his duties as the junior varsity boys basketball coach.
“It’s so great to be back. It’s been like a full circle thing,” Jones said.
Jones, 41, is certainly qualified, considering he was a golf professional at Rotonda Golf and Country Club, Long Marsh and Deep Creek Golf Club. He’s also graduate of the Golf Academy of America in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Now he’s tasked with turning around the Manta Rays’ program.
“I’m looking forward to working with the kids,” Jones said. “I was a golf pro in the area for a long time so I was real familiar with the kids and working with them and helping them grow with the game. I’m sure you could talk to all the pros around here and they’ll say ‘the game is not growing’ so hopefully we can get more kids out to play.”
