BASEBALL: Port Charlotte drops district opener

By Chuck Ballaro, Sun Correspondent

The Port Charlotte High School baseball team dropped its District 6A-11 opener against Cypress Lake 6-2 on Tuesday.

Robert Wegielnik struck out 12 in 5 2/3 innings and Noah Rivera and Darren Tobias hit back-to-back home runs in the fifth to give the Panthers (3-1, 1-0) some breathing room.
In the third inning, Tate McMenamy reached first on a fielder’s choice and went to third after Matt LePoint’s pickoff attempt went into right field.
McMenamy would score when the catcher’s throw back to the pitcher went wild to put the Panthers on the board.
In the fourth, the catcher dropped a third strike to Janmikell Bastardo and threw wild to first, allowing Wegielnik to score to make it 2-0 and help chase LePoint, who allowed two unearned runs in 3 1/3 innings, striking out four and walking three.
Dominic Delgaudio came on and got out of a bases-loaded situation in the fourth before allowing the back-to-back homers in the fifth.
Three walks and a fourth Port Charlotte error led to two more runs in the sixth before the Pirates made some noise in the seventh, more with grunts of pain as they were hit by three pitches in the inning. Romain Reynolds walked to force home one run to put the Pirates (2-1, 0-1) on the board and they scored their second on a double play hit by Jason James.
Port Charlotte had only three hits, but because off the walks, getting hit by pitches and three errors, was able to put runners on base, where 12 of them were stranded.
