BASEBALL NOTEBOOK: Focus heads to district play

By Jordan Kroeger, SunCoast Sports

There’s about a month left in the regular season and all four area teams are gearing up for their district runs.
Lemon Bay picked up two wins this past week, including a 7-3 district win over DeSoto County on Friday to push its record to 2-0 in the conference standings. Friday’s win was one that also left an impression on coach Casey Hanrahan, who called the victory the best his team has played this season just three nights after Lemon Bay defeated Oasis 10-0.
Port Charlotte was the only other team in the area to play a district contest last week, splitting its two games with Cape Coral. That keeps the Pirates at 3-3 in the district standings, two games back of leader Ida Baker. The Pirates also lost at North Port 6-1 last week.
North Port has a played a load of games over the last 11 days, which included four games over two days in Tennessee at the Wildcat Classic at Hixson High School. The Bobcats split their four games in the tournament before coming home to beat Port Charlotte and then North Fort Myers on Thursday, 10-0.
Charlotte entered the week ranked No. 9 in the PrepZone.com state rankings for Class 7A, but could find itself outside the top 10 after losing both its games in the Sarasota Classic last week, falling to Sarasota 6-0 and then Mosley 10-0. The Tarpons bounced back on Thursday, defeating Palmetto 3-0 at home, a needed boost headed into tonight’s district contest against Class 7A No. 1 Venice.
