By Gary Brown, Sun Correspondent
ENGLEWOOD – Lemon Bay’s softball team came through with a big hitting effort as it defeated Riverview 10-7 at home in a non-district game Monday night.
Senior Kasi Shaffer and junior Rayne Wells led the way for the Manta Rays’ offense. Shaffer broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the fifth inning with a deep solo home run over the right field fence. That got the Manta Rays going as they scored six more runs in the inning for a 10-3 edge. Wells had a triple and single, plus three RBI and two runs scored.
Wells gave Lemon Bay a 2-1 lead in the second inning with a triple that scored Aimee Holt. Later in the fifth inning, Wells drove in two more runs with a single to finish the night with three RBI. She also reached base on a walk to finish the night 2-for-3.
“I was hitting pitches on the outside,” Wells said. “This is the most RBI I’ve had.”
Despite the big fifth inning, the Manta Rays had to hold off a Rams rally. Riverview scored twice in both the sixth and seventh innings to cut the Manta Rays’ lead to three runs before they finished the game on a ground out.
Lemon Bay starting pitcher Bailey Grossenbacher also had a hot bat for the winners. She singled in the second inning and added a run-scoring triple in the fifth. Leanna Kelly added three hits and scored once for the Manta Rays, who finished with 14 hits to 10 for Riverview.
Grossenbacher,a freshman,  pitched the first 3 1/3 innings before Logan Johnson took over and pitched the rest of the way for the victory. Taylor Currie pitched four-plus innings for the Rams and Holly Peluso pitched the rest of the contest.
“We had a good hitting night,” Lemon Bay coach Kim Pinkham said. “We’re getting better but we always seem to make it difficult for ourselves.”
