SOFTBALL NOTEBOOK: Big tests coming for area teams

By Jordan Kroeger, SunCoast Sports

It was a pretty good week for North Port last week against the rest of the area, defeating Port Charlotte and Lemon Bay for its first 10-win season under coach Dennis Bell. The Bobcats will face their biggest test of the season on Wednesday when they face Lakewood Ranch, ranked No. 1 in the state in the Miracle Sports state softball poll.
Lemon Bay continues to head in the opposite direction as the rest of the teams in the area, losing two more games last week, including a district loss to DeSoto County on Friday. That loss was Lemon Bay’s ninth in its last 10 games.
Port Charlotte continues to be a bit of an enigma, losing games outside of its district but winning the important ones inside the division. The Pirates went 1-2 last week, splitting their two district games against Cape Coral to pull their district record to 6-2, which is even in the loss column with 8-2 Mariner for second in the standings.
Charlotte is ranked No. 9 in Class 7A in the latest Miracle Sports state softball poll. Last week saw the Tarpons lose to Sarasota before bouncing back with an 8-inning win over Naples on Friday. The Tarpons have a big district test this coming Friday against division leader Fort Myers, which swept all four meetings between the teams in 2016, including last year’s district championship and regional semifinal. Fort Myers is ranked fourth in Class 7A by Miracle Sports.
