BASEBALL NOTEBOOK: Area teams sit in different spots in standings; area stat leaders

By Jordan Kroeger, SunCoast Sports

Every team in the area sits at a different spot in the standings in its respective districts.

Lemon Bay is the only team in first place in its division, picking up wins over Lake Placid and Dunbar last week to remain perfect at 4-0 in District 5A-12 play and one game ahead of DeSoto County heading into the weekend. The two teams played last night in Englewood (see our blog for result).

Charlotte had a chance to take full possession of first place in District 7A-11 last week but lost to highly-touted Venice, which was ranked No. 2 in Class 7A last week in the state baseball poll. Those two teams play again tonight in Punta Gorda, and depending on last night’s result between Charlotte and North Port, a loss could guarantee the Tarpons the No. 2 seed in the district tournament later this month while giving Venice the No. 1 seed. On the other hand, a Charlotte win could force a coin flip with Venice down the road for the top seed.

Over in North Port, the Bobcats sit in the basement of District 7A-11. North Port lost two district contests last week, falling to Fort Myers and Venice on the road to drop its district record to 0-4. The Bobcats are playing for the No. 3 seed in the district tournament at this point, needing wins over Charlotte last night and Venice on Thursday to make it happen.

Port Charlotte appears to be the dark horse in District 6A-11. The Pirates are tied for third in the standings with Cypress Lake, splitting their two contests against North Fort Myers last week. But Port Charlotte can really shake things up down the stretch with two district contests against Mariner this week (3-5, fifth place) and two more against first-place Ida Baker (7-1) later this month.
