BASEBALL NOTEBOOK: District tournaments closing in for area teams

By Jordan Kroeger, SunCoast Sports

Three teams in the area have already locked up their seeds for the upcoming district tournaments.
Another has a chance to improve its spot.
Port Charlotte won both its district games last week, sweeping the season series with Mariner to improve to 6-4 in the conference. The Pirates can’t catch top-seeded Ida Baker, which is 9-1, but they can make things interesting with Cape Coral, which is 8-4.
If the Pirates can manage to knock off Ida Baker in their final two district games, they’ll likely force a coin-flip tiebreaker with Cape Coral to determine the No. 2 seed. On the other hand, if Ida Baker sweeps those games, then Port Charlotte will finish tied with Cypress Lake at 6-6. That would drop Port Charlotte to the No. 4 seed for the District 6A-11 Tournament because Cypress Lake swept the season series.
Lemon Bay wrapped up the top seed in District 5A-12 last week, defeating DeSoto County and Dunbar to finish a perfect 6-0 in district play. The Manta Rays will face Dunbar in the district semifinals.
Charlotte suffered an 8-0 loss to Venice on Thursday, which clinched the No. 1 seed for Venice and the No. 2 seed for Charlotte in the District 7A-11 Tournament. The Tarpons will face Fort Myers while the Indians will get North Port in the district semifinals.
