BASEBALL NOTEBOOK: Port Charlotte eyes No. 2 seed, updated area stats

By Jordan Kroeger, SunCoast Sports
It’s a big week for the Port Charlotte Pirates.
The Pirates face district leader Ida Baker twice, with the first meeting tonight in Port Charlotte. If Port Charlotte (6-4) can sweep Ida Baker, it would catch Cape Coral (8-4) for second in the District 6A-11 standings and force a tiebreaker for the No. 2 seed in the district tournament. Ida Baker (9-1) has already clinched the No. 1 seed.
But here’s where it gets dicey for the Pirates.
Cypress Lake is 4-6 in the district standings and plays Island Coast (3-7) twice this week. If Port Charlotte loses both games to Ida Baker and Cypress Lake sweeps Island Coast, then both teams would finish (6-6) in the standings and a tiebreaker would take place for the No. 3 seed in the district tournament because the teams split their two meetings this season.
Port Charlotte could potentially go from having home field advantage through district semifinals as the No. 2 seed to playing on the road in the district semis with a playoff spot on the line.
Needless to say, a lot is on the line this week.
