The Lemon Bay baseball team likely earned the easiest regional playoff berth in state history Tuesday night.
Dunbar, which was supposed to face the Manta Rays in the District 5A-12 semifinals, forfeited Tuesday’s contest. As a result, Lemon Bay advances to Thursday’s district championship game while also clinching a regional playoff berth.
Lemon Bay swept the season series from Dunbar, winning the two games by a combined score of 33-1.
The Imagine School defeated Oasis 7-5 in the District 4A-5 quarterfinals Monday night.
Trailing 3-2 in the top of the fifth, Imagine’s Julio Maria and Dillon Williams hit back-to-back singles to force a pitching change and set up the tying run. Ben Cecchini laid down a suicide-squeeze bunt to score Maria and knot the game at 3-3.
Nick Berhalter then hit a 2-RBI double to put the Sharks up 5-3 and ahead for good. In the top of the seventh, Williams lead off with a single, Brian Smith hit a double and two more singles gave the Sharks a 7 -3 lead.
Brian Smith pitched 5 2/3 innings while Anthony Lorenz finished off the game.
Imagine will face Bishop Verot in the district semifinals tonight.
