FORT MYERS — The stage is set for the rematch.
Bishop Verot and Cardinal Mooney breezed through their District 4A-5 semifinal games Tuesday at Bishop Verot High School, setting up a showdown for the district title on Friday.
Cardinal Mooney ousted Gateway Charter 10-0 in six innings in the early game Tuesday, with Bishop Verot rolling past Imagine School North Port 13-1 in a five-inning nightcap.
Bishop Verot (18-8) put up nine runs in the first inning against an outclassed Imagine School (2-19). The inning included five hits – including two doubles and a triple – as well as five walks, four errors and three Sharks pitchers.
Blaze Alexander had an RBI single, an RBI triple and scored a run in the first inning. Zach Thomas and Gunnar Byrd each scored twice and had an RBI double.
Thomas finished the night 3-for-4, scoring twice, with two doubles and two RBI. He reached base all four times up (including an error). Mike Green scored three runs for the Vikings.
Bishop Verot coach Austin Flores used the opportunity to spread the pitching work – a one-hitter – between four different Vikings. Byrd worked the first two innings, striking out four Sharks. Tyler Gogure worked the third, with two strikeouts. Dawin Bishop and Cade Middleton finished up with an inning each and two strikeouts each.
Clay Bombenger had Imagine School’s only hit. Michael Fisher scored for the Sharks in the fifth on a walk and an error.
The Sharks committed six errors.
