FOOTBALL: Lemon Bay drops abbreviated spring game

By Bryan Levine, SunCoast Sports

IN A NUTSHELL: Lemon Bay and Berkeley Prep played just one half of an actual game followed by a 20-minute unofficial scrimmage. The Manta Rays were more or less the better team during the real game, but two big plays allowed the Buccaneers to steal a 14-7 victory.

DID YOU SEE THAT: Berkeley Prep quarterback Joshua Youngblood hit receiver Zack Mathis for a short completion, but Mathis found a hole in the Lemon Bay defense, and ran 70 yards before he was tackled. That eventually set up the game-winning touchdown in the second quarter.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN: This was not treated as if it were a normal game. As the clock ticked down tot he final second in the official portion of the game, rather than throw a Hail Mary on fourth down, Lemon Bay punted to just to head to the locker room.

UNSUNG HERO: Tyler Klocinski had 34 rushing yards and scored the Manta Rays’ only touchdown, but it was what he did on defense which could easily go unnoticed. While Ryan Johnson was credited with an interception, it was Klocinski who tipped to ball in the air to allow Johnson to force the turnover.

THEY SAID IT: “I thought our kids faced a very good football team — a very large football team — and didn’t back down. I thought we were for physical and played with better effort, and that’s what we talked about. I’m very proud of their effort and their toughness.” – Lemon Bay coach Don Southwell
