FOOTBALL: Port Charlotte 2017 preview

By Jordan Kroeger, SunCoast Sports

STRENGTHS

The Pirates have chemistry and experience on both sides of the ball. Third-year starter Paul Barnes brings senior leadership to the quarterback position and he’s playing with an offensive line that’s been together for multiple years. South Florida commit Devin Leacock leads a physical defensive line while safety T.J. Luther brings experience to the secondary.

WEAKNESS

Depth has been a challenge for the Pirates the past few years and it will be again in 2017. Although Port Charlotte is in Class 6A, its size is closer to that of a 5A school, causing back-up talent to be an issuer beyond its starters.

PLAYER TO WATCH

T.J. Luther, Sr., ATH
Luther is a Swiss Army knife for the Pirates, able to play multiple positions on both sides of the ball. Look for him to line up at wide receiver, running back, safety and cornerback this season while also returning kicks and punts. What quarterback Paul Barnes brings to the offense, Luther brings to the defense. He gets the entire secondary lined up and makes all the calls and checks.

UNDER THE RADAR

Tyler Perry, Jr., ATH
Port Charlotte Coach Jordan Ingman calls Perry extremely competitive, one of the most competitive he’s ever coached. Perry has the athletic ability to go with his competitiveness and can play wide receiver as well as defensive back. He also serves as Barnes’ backup with the ability to throw it 50 yards on the run.
