FOOTBALL: Venice 2017 preview

By Scott Lockwood, SunCoast Sports

STRENGTH

Aside from Bryce Carpenter and Jaivon Heiligh on the offensive side of the ball, the real strength for Venice this year will be its defense. The Indians return nine starters from last year’s team that went 12-1 and won a regional title. Defensive tackle Tyrone Barber, who committed to the University of South Florida during the summer, anchors a defensive line with Carson Sullivan (team-high seven sacks in 2016) and Riley Prachar. Linebackers Caleb Smith, Drue Streich and Noah Lay are the heart of the defense, while defensive backs Jeremy Trebbles and Jared Bailey will take away the opposing quarterback’s top options in the passing games.

WEAKNESS

Replacing Matt Laroche, the 2016 Class 7A player of the year, will not be an easy task. Seniors Damien Brown, who is a converted wide receiver, and Court Doss have been locked in a position battle to be the starting tailback. Brown has shown flashes of being the outside runner that Laroche was, while Doss, who saw his 2016 season end prematurely thanks to an ankle injury, is more of a power runner who can get the tough yards over the middle. Brown and Doss split carries during the recent scrimmage against Port Charlotte and will need to step in and help Carpenter, who led Venice in rushing during the spring game and was second on the team last year. Venice head coach John Peacock says this team will “be in a good place” with whomever wins the job.

PLAYER TO WATCH

Drue Streich. Sr., LB
Streich, who was last year’s team defensive MVP, will be moving from outside linebacker back to the inside where he played as a sophomore. He was third on the team last year with 87 tackles, recovered three fumbles to go with an interception. Smith was second on the team with 116 total tackles.

Under the radar

Zack Fryar, Jr., TE
Fryar will be following in the footsteps of tight end Aaron Hackett, who is now playing at Syracuse. Peacock said the junior has had a big summer and has the potential to develop into a Division I tight end just like Hackett and another past Indian who went to Syracuse — current Venice assistant Beckett Wales.
