FOOTBALL: Week 5 preview capsules

By Jordan Kroeger, SunCoast Sports

Fort Myers (1-1) at Charlotte (1-1)

Kickoff: 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Neither team played.
Last season: Charlotte 24, Fort Myers 6 (regular season); Charlotte 28, Fort Myers 24 2 OT (region final).
Players to watch: Fort Myers: Randy Smith (Sr., RB/CB), Yasias Young (So., RB/CB), Xavier Perez (Sr., RB/LB), Willie Neal (Jr., QB/CB); Charlotte: Alex Muse (Jr., QB), Savorion Warren (Sr., RB/DB), Andrew Grace (Sr., RB/CB), Ny Harvey (Sr., RB/S), Jayden Grant (Jr., DE).
What to expect: This is easily the game of the week in Charlotte County as the Tarpons and Green Wave meet in a rematch of last season’s Region 6A-3 final. Charlotte won that meeting as well as the teams’ regular-season contest, but both lost plenty of players from last year. Both teams also are playing in their first game since Sept. 1 due to Hurricane Irma so don’t be surprised if there’s a little rust.

Port Charlotte (2-0) at Booker (0-3)

Kickoff: 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Neither team played.
Last season: Port Charlotte 28, Booker 0.
Players to watch: Port Charlotte: Paul Barnes (Sr., QB), Octavious Cummings (Sr., RB), T.J. Luther (Sr., WR/S), Bo Guy (So, RB), Devin Leacock (Sr., DL), Ludison Jeanty (Sr., DL); Booker: Talik Keaton (Sr., QB), Jermaine Ziegler (Sr., WR/CB), Anthony Thomas (Sr., S), Jacquez Bristol (Jr., MLB/DE).
What to expect: The Tornadoes were shut out in their first two games of the season before putting up 14 against Sarasota two weeks ago, only to lose by 20. The Pirates won this game easily a season ago and could very well do the same tonight as they eagerly take the field for the first time in three weeks.

Lemon Bay (1-0) at Cardinal Mooney (2-0)

Kickoff: 7 p.m.
Last week: Neither team played.
Last season: Did not play.
Players to watch: Lemon Bay: Hayden Wolff (Jr., QB), Logan Lydic (Sr., RB/LB), Thomas Chaney (Sr., WR/DE); Cardinal Mooney: Bryce Williams (Sr., RB), Tray Hall (So., RB/DB).
What to expect: Neither team has played a game in three weeks due to weather so who knows exactly what to expect. The Cougars made the playoffs a year ago thanks to a stellar season by running back Bryce Williams, who the Manta Rays must stop to have a chance to pull out the win.

DeSoto County (0-0) at North Port (1-2)

Kickoff: 7:30 p.m.
Last week: DeSoto County did not play; Sarasota 27, North Port 6.
Last season: Did not play.
Players to watch: DeSoto County: Arnold Mele (Jr., WR/DB), Malcolm Smith (Sr., QB/DB), Neo Hilliard (Jr., RB/DB); North Port: Devon Allen (Sr., QB/S), C.K. Poulos (Sr., WR/CB), Javon Howell (Sr., RB/S), Brian Taylor (So., RB/LB).
What to expect: No team has been hit harder by weather this season than the Bulldogs, who still haven’t played a game. They’re hoping tonight is finally the night against the Bobcats, who enter the contest on three days rest after falling to Sarasota in their district opener Monday. North Port failed to convert opportunities in that game on both sides of the ball and will need to have a short memory to get back to .500.

Dunbar (2-0) at Venice (2-0)

Kickoff: 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Neither team played.
Last season: Did not play.
Players to watch: Dunbar: Zacharie Georges (Sr., QB), Shocky Jacques-Louis (Sr., WR), Seneca Milledge (Jr., WR), Rocky Jacques-Louis (Sr., DE), Bakari Jackson (Sr., MLB), Derick Hunter (Jr., DE); Venice: Bryce Carpenter (Sr., QB), Court Doss (Sr., RB), Jaivon Heiligh (Sr., WR/CB), Jared Bailey (Sr., DB), Tyrone Barber (Sr., DT).
What to expect: Instead of taking a scheduled bye week after not playing for the previous two, the Tigers and Indians scheduled one another in a battle of two ranked teams in the state. Dunbar is ranked No. 7 in Class 5A while Venice is third in Class 7A, making this a marquee matchup, but it won’t count toward the playoff standings because the game was scheduled after the start of the season. Expect a tough game for the Indians as the Tigers already have statement wins over Charlotte and Lehigh this season.
