FOOTBALL: Week 7 previews, area stats, power of 3

Kickoff: 7 p.m.
Last week: Lemon Bay 36, DeSoto County 16; Estero 28, East Lee County 28-0.
Last season: Estero 21, Lemon Bay 0.
Players to watch: Lemon Bay: Hayden Wolff (Jr., QB), Logan Lydic (Sr., LB/SB), Thomas Chaney (Sr., WR/DE), Keegan Marinola (Jr., RB/LB), Josh Gossett (Jr., RB); Estero: Tanner Elliott (So., QB), Ethan Johnson (Sr., LB), Harrison Raynor (Sr., DE), Jesse Vail (Sr., DB).
What to expect: Estero has had a tumultuous week after head coach Jeff Hanlon was reassigned pending an investigation by the Lee County School District, according to the Fort Myers News Press. Offensive coordinator Brad Vojcak was named interim coach and will lead a Wildcats squad that shut out the Manta Rays last season. This is the third game in nine days for Lemon Bay, which is fresh off of a big district win over DeSoto County on Monday thanks to its running game.

Kickoff: 7 p.m.
Last week: Lake Placid 18, Mulberry 10; Lemon Bay 36, DeSoto County 16.
Last season: Did not play.
Players to watch: Lake Placid: Katwan Ward (So, RB/LB), Javari White (Fr., RB/LB); DeSoto County: Arnold Mele (Jr., WR/DB), Malcom Smith (Sr., QB/DB), Neo Hilliard (Jr., RB/DB)
What to expect: DeSoto County finally scored its first points of the season Monday but still lost by 20 in a loss to Lemon Bay. Lake Placid won its first game against Mulberry last week but has struggled to score points this season with its two-headed rushing attack of Katwan Ward and Javari White, putting up a total of just 32 on the scoreboard in three games. Expect a low-scoring contest in this one.

Kickoff: 7:30 p.m.
Last week: Booker 6, Bayshore 0; Lakewood Ranch 28, North Port 13.
Last season: North Port 35, Bayshore 12.
Players to watch: Bayshore: Zy’darrian James (So., RB), Miguel Rodriguez (Sr., ATH); North Port: C.K. Poulos (Sr., QB/WR/CB), Javon Howell (Sr., RB/S), Brian Taylor (So., RB/LB).
What to expect: This was North Port’s lone win a season ago and should be its third “W” in 2017. Bayshore was shut out last week and has scored only 27 points in three games this year. C.K. Poulos moved from receiver to quarterback last week in place of the injured Devon Allen and will likely take the snaps again for the Bobcats.

Kickoff: 7:30 p.m.
Last week: IMG Academy 21, Miami Northwestern 0; Venice 41, Braden River 35.
Last season: Did not play.
Players to watch: IMG Academy: Zach Annexstad (Sr., QB), Brian Hightower (Sr., WR), Trey Sanders (Jr., RB), Mike Jones Jr. (Sr., LB), Shamuar McDowell (Sr., DB); Venice: Bryce Carpenter (Sr., QB), Court Doss (Sr., RB), Jaivon Heiligh (Sr., WR/CB), Jared Bailey (Sr., DB), Tyrone Barber (Sr., DT).
What to expect: It’s a battle of unbeatens pairing two of the top teams in the state. What more could you want? This will be a tough game for Venice as IMG Academy is ranked No. 1 in the state by MaxPreps. IMG Academy is fresh off of a shutout over Miami Northwestern, which is ranked No. 5 in the state by MaxPreps. That may tell you all you need to know about tonight’s matchup, considering Venice is ranked 9th.

Port Charlotte
Paul Barnes, QB
The Pirate quarterback completed just four passes in Port Charlotte’s win over Cape Coral earlier this week, but all of those completions eventually found the end zone on the way to a 129-yard evening.

Port Charlotte
Chase Shatney, ATH
Shatney was the main beneficiary of Barnes’ multi-touchdown game. The Pirates receiver caught three passes for 89 yards and three TDs in the win.

Jayden Grant, ATH
Grant has carved a crucial role on both sides of the ball for the Tarpons. On offense, he had five carries for 107 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns. He was one of only two players (Lemon Bay’s Keegnan Marinola was the other) in the area to eclipse 100 yards rushing earlier this week.
